Where are the volunteer blood donors?

The Edmonton Journal published  this letter March 17, 2017.

Is the Alberta government’s decision to ban private blood-plasma facilities, and the Journal’s support for it, based on medical evidence? Political ideology? The anti-privatization agenda of Health Minister Sarah Hoffman? A “thank you” to unions?

Hoffman and the Journal offered no horror stories and no data to justify this Draconian legislation.

Nor have they identified how and from where Canada will magically achieve a 75% increase of 600,000 more volunteer donors.

But, here’s medical/health care evidence worth noting: The performance of Canada’s health care system [Medicare] ranks second from the bottom among 11 countries in the most recent research by the Commonwealth Fund. The private sector plays an important role in all nine countries ahead of us.

Canada’s government-run health care system – Medicare -- is a monopoly that prohibits private hospital and private physician care. Medicare is a subpar performer, ranking 10th among 11 advanced countries. Canadians deserve much better! Patients deserve timely access to quality care and choice of hospitals and physicians. Taxpayers deserve much more value for their tax dollars.
