Manitobans suffer as province fails to meet target for cataract surgery

Manitoba seniors waiting for cataract surgery must feel like a child waiting for Christmas: How long will it be until I can see properly?

According to a Canadian Press story April 1, 2016, “Many people in the province face long waits for the procedure as the number of surgeries being performed isn’t keeping face with a growing wait list.” And, almost 60% wait more than the target of 16 weeks.

Manitoba seniors can spend several thousand dollars on a new HD television that they can’t see. Now, if only they could escape government rationing and spend just a few hundred dollars of their own money to have their eyesight restored sooner than the Medicare monopoly allows.

Canada’s government-run health care system – Medicare -- is a monopoly that prohibits private hospital and private physician care. Medicare is a subpar performer, ranking 10th among 11 advanced countries. Canadians deserve much better! Patients deserve timely access to quality care and choice of hospitals and physicians. Taxpayers deserve much more value for their tax dollars.
